Last year Beyond the Classroom Australia launched a new program – Dare To Be A Rockstar Teacher taking the well-being sector of education by storm with this bespoke program.

Founder Peta Jeppesen teamed up with Monash University to create a 6-month program designed to build a positive school culture with improved staff well-being promoting school-wide target goals. At the onset of the program CASEL5 is utilised and analysed by Monash University to determine the focus of the program for each school.

Principals and schools across Australia are increasingly overwhelmed with the task of improving teacher burnout and retention rates, with more staff members leaving the profession than ever before. The shift in focus on retention rates leaves leadership with less energy to pour into building the overall school culture.

Peta understands what you are going through because she was there too. She knows the feeling of being overwhelmed as a teacher and then again as a principal.

It wasn’t until she developed the systems and processes that are now part of her “Dare To Be A Rockstar Teacher” program did things change. Peta now coaches’ teachers and principals on simple yet powerful strategies that allow them to take on the challenges they face and grow. The core philosophy of Beyond the Classroom is to support educators in being the best they can in school.

In a recent interview with Dare To Be A Rockstar Teacher 2023 participant and principal, Katrina Dunne, from St. Mary’s School, Charleville shared that it was incredibly supportive to participate in the program across terms 3 and 4, as this is when teachers are typically at the highest risk for burnout. She noted a positive impact on staff wellbeing and mindset which helped students finish the year strong.

Katrina shared a whole list of improvements to her school culture, notably improved teaching practices, increase in resilience, stronger staff relationships, and enhanced classroom environment. Overall, she also benefited from the program as her staff was more autonomous both in tactile challenges and relationally.

Designed to provide support to teaching professionals by instilling confidence and helping them adapt to the changing demands of the profession, Peta works to support schools in developing a framework for prioritising teacher workflows, wellbeing, and self-care. Although the program focuses on the logistics of goal support, the foundation is designed to support staff wellbeing.

Dare To Be A Rockstar Teacher includes strategy and support sessions with your well-being officers alongside group coaching for your teachers. The program concludes with a celebration breakfast for all the participating staff members. Each program includes the CASEL5 analysis at the onset and conclusion of the program to track your outcomes.

With Beyond the Classroom, you’re not just addressing immediate concerns, but you’re compassionately investing in a supportive, vibrant future for your school community, ensuring every educator and student thrives.

“There are so many good teachers out there and with a bit of help and support, and a voice, they could be teaching for another three to five years,” Ms. Jeppesen said.

“It starts with believing in your school culture.”
