Three entitlements all first year teachers should be aware of

Your first year of teaching is unforgettable: from managing your own classroom to interacting with parents, collaborating with colleagues, and figuring out the ins and outs of the school system.

By now, you've probably received a ton of advice: don't overwork yourself, make time for activities you enjoy outside of work - and of course, join your union!

As a highly unionised workforce, the majority of school staff are AEU members. We understand the power of working together to achieve common goals, whether it's in the best interests of our students or in protecting and improving our rights at work.

It’s a cliche, but there is a reason that they say teaching is a marathon and not a sprint. If you want to make an ongoing impact for your students and the public school system, you need to look after yourself. Part of that is understanding what you’re entitled to under the Victorian Government Schools Agreement (VGSA).

A quick refresher: the Victorian Government Schools Agreement (VGSA) is the document which mandates the pay and conditions for public school staff. The VGSA is negotiated by the AEU and the Victorian Government to ensure that public school staff are being provided with the entitlements and working conditions they need to be supported in their work.

Securing improved conditions in the VGSA is important, and it’s just as important for individuals to understand their rights in the workplace. Here are three entitlements that have been won by your union that all early career teachers in their first 12 months of teaching are entitled to.

  1. The right to a mentor
Early career teachers in their first 12 months of teaching in Victorian public schools should be matched with a mentor. Your mentor will support your wellbeing, help you develop your teaching practice, and assist you in understanding your school’s culture.

  2. A reduction in face-to-face teaching hours
First year teachers need extra time to develop their practice and to participate in mentoring and other support activities. This means that all first-year teachers must be allocated at least 5% less work each week compared to their more experienced colleagues.

  3. Time in Lieu
Ok, so this entitlement isn’t just for first years… but we still think it’s important to know.If a teacher is required to attend work outside of their usual attendance or hours of work, including attending a camp they will accrue time in lieu.

What if I’m not receiving my entitlements, or if I need support to understand more?
