STEM during Virtual Learning
Written by Melisa Hayes, Hilliard Online Academy, Ohio, USA
Let’s face it. This year has been very difficult not only on the kids but the parents, teachers and admin as well! We have all persevered!
We have found new and innovative ways to instruct, motivate and inspire! For me, my creativity has been tested but I can honestly say that I am so enjoying teaching online. Sure, I miss the hugs, dance parties, hearing the giggles and seeing the looks on my kids’ faces when they grasp a concept, but being virtual doesn’t mean you can’t have those things as well. It may just look a little different. STEM projects are an amazing way of seeing those smiles, giggles and that look of accomplishment!
At the beginning of the year, I remember creating my first STEM project for my team of nine 2nd grade teachers. From then the kids were hooked! I develop a STEM project a week for my kids to accomplish. I take into account what materials each child may have and modify accordingly. I also do drop offs each week for my family. I organize a STEM bag each month for my kids so each has ample STEM products to use for each project a week. Not only do the kids love the STEM projects but teachers do as well! We love seeing our kids thinking differently and flexibly. We love seeing their questions, reflections, designs, productive struggles, creations, and inventions! STEM isn’t its own identity, it’s a way of thinking that needs to be incorporated in everything we teach!
