The Additional Needs Virtual Symposium 2020 will be held on Tuesday 22 September 2020 from 12.00 to 4.00pm (AEST). The Symposium will bring educators together with the common goal of working toward making classrooms inclusive for all students.
This condensed program includes shortened sessions, or pre-cursors to our 2021 face-to-face events.

Andrea will share her latest insights into effective ways to enhance belonging and well-being in education. She will highlight why learning aligned with purpose, fostering meaning and having a clear direction is fundamental in 21st century learning.

My students don’t listen! – it may be because they have auditory processing difficulties
Auditory processing (AP) is not the same as hearing and many students with normal hearing thresholds still have difficulty following instructions and comprehending what they hear.
This presentation will provide a brief introduction to this very complex and important topic. You will gain an overview of the elements involved in AP; an understanding of the behaviours that children with AP difficulties may exhibit; the factors that exacerbate AP difficulties, and a few strategies you can implement to support your students in the classroom.

Sensory-based strategies to manage anxiety and overwhelm in the classroom
Anxiety can have a detrimental impact on a child’s academic performance, ability to interact effectively with peers, and can erode their confidence and self-esteem. This brief session will provide you with 10 quick tips to help kids manage anxiety in the classroom.

‘See the person’ inclusion of students with a disability in mainstream education
In this session, teachers and school support staff will hear a first-hand account of the power of language from a Scope educator with a lived experience of disability. Attendees will be introduced to person-first language and how embedding this in everyday practice can enhance and improve the school experience for all learners with a disability. This simple strategy underpins all inclusive practices and reflects our ability to ‘see the person’.

Using technology tools to include all students
The mindset that sits behind assistive technology will be considered, how students’ difficulties in mainstream schooling can be approached from a strength-based lens. Processes and practices from a real-world Secondary College will be explored and how similar systems can be put in place for students in your setting.
