Walk into any classroom and you’ll see thoughtful differentiation in action – adjusted texts, scaffolded writing, hands-on maths materials, targeted intervention groups. Yet one of the most significant barriers to learning often sits in plain sight: language load.
For many neurodivergent students, including those with Language Disorder and language vulnerabilities, the language through which curriculum is delivered, becomes a bottleneck.
Instructions, explanations, questions, worksheets, and assessment items often assume efficient comprehension of dense, rapid, abstract, and syntactically complex language.
The good news is that one shift consistently improves access without impeding any learner… visuals.
Visuals do not make it easier. They make it clearer.
What exactly is language load?
Language load is the volume and complexity of spoken and written language a student must process to understand, participate, and demonstrate what they know. It includes:
- sentence length and grammatical complexity
- information density
- abstract or unfamiliar vocabulary
- speed of delivery and limited processing time
- competing sensory input (noise, visual clutter, transitions)
- higher-order language demands (inferencing, predicting, explaining, justifying)
- executive function demands (working memory, attention shifting, planning)
When language load is high, students with difficulties in any of these skill areas will be impacted.
Why visuals help everyone (and hurt no one)
Evidence informs us that pairing spoken and written language with visuals strengthens comprehension and retention because learners aren’t relying on a single mode to encode meaning. Dual coding theory describes how verbal and visual information can be processed through related systems, creating more “hooks” or “anchors” for memory and understanding.
But we don’t need to cite research to recognise what we can see every day:
- Improves understanding. Students learn better when information is presented with both words and pictures.
- Strengthens memory. Visual + verbal information gives the brain two pathways for remembering.
- Reduces anxiety. Knowing what is happening next makes the day feel predictable and safe.
- Increases independence. Students rely less on repeated teacher reminders.
- Improved engagement. Visual schedules help students stay engaged longer.
- Supports students with language difficulties. Visuals reduce language load without lowering expectations.
- Benefits all students.
No student is impeded by a visual support. The expectations remain, and the content becomes accessible.
A teacher’s classroom reality
Recent conversations with teachers working with diverse class profiles rendered the case for embedded visuals with blunt clarity:
“Images don’t hurt anyone. Double exposure doesn’t hurt anyone.”
Layering spoken instruction + written words + visual symbols so students receive the same message through multiple formats at once. In these classrooms, visuals aren’t an “extra”, they’re the default.
Programs like Clicker and AssistiveWare’s Micalo (alongside other symbol-supported tools) are being integrated successfully to create consistent visual access across tasks. They’re constructing sentences, building vocabulary, supporting spelling, and anchoring understanding with symbol cues. Now, the focus here is not on the product, but the pedagogy:
“Everything can be picturised… It matches what we’re doing.”
That phrase, “it matches”, is a universal design principle in action. Visuals work best when they are embedded, consistent, and aligned across teaching, practice, and assessment.
What does this actually look like?
Here are some of the moves that make visuals universal, not optional.
1) Picturise both instructions and content
Many students fail tasks because the instructional language is the barrier.
Visual supports for “what to do” are often the highest-impact first step:
- ‘First / Then / Next’ boards
- step-by-step checklists
- worked examples with visual cues
- highlighted keywords (do, circle, justify, compare)
Visuals should not stop at instructions. So much of our lesson content can be made visual.
- Vocabulary can be picturised and paired with symbols or images.
- Abstract concepts can be mapped using diagrams or graphic organisers.
- Processes can be represented through flowcharts or timelines.
- Cause-and-effect relationships can be illustrated.
Daily agendas, timetables and materials lists should always be visually anchored (e.g., what’s happening first, what equipment is needed, what the outcome looks like).
Visual schedule principles:
- Visuals should be at student eye level. Students need to easily see (and reach) the schedule.
- Match the visual to the learner. Some students may be better supported with photos, some may need simple symbols, written words should be included.
- Keep it clear and visually uncluttered. The visual space around a visual schedule should be bare and clear of visual clutter.
- Allow for student interaction. Let students tick off, move visuals, or remove them so they can see progress.
- Embed visual schedules into everyday classroom practice. Include all students when embedding a visual schedule in the classroom, especially to support transitions.
- Use the same visuals consistently. Consistency across tasks, classrooms and schools support understanding, independence and use.
- Explicitly teach students how to use the schedule. Model use, provide prompts, then gradually support independence.
- Make them flexible. Schedules should be easy to update and move if necessary.
2) Robust and visual vocabulary instruction
Students with language vulnerabilities often struggle to learn and use new vocabulary. The evidence suggests that although typically developing children require around 6-10 repetitions of a word in order to understand and use the word, students with Language Disorder may require 36 to 40 exposures. Visual symbol systems and consistent category pathways act as a map for meaning. Thus, supporting students to learn not only the word, but where it “lives” conceptually.
An example from a science lesson:
Students could categorise animals (mammal, bird, fish, invertebrate) because the vocabulary was repeatedly paired with visuals and located within structured categories of the symbol program (Micalo), building vocabulary depth without lengthy verbal explanation.
3) Using symbol-supported sentence scaffolds
Visual sentence scaffolds reduce the motor, spelling, and language-planning requirements, so students can focus on the concept.
Sentence frames paired with visuals allow students to produce increasingly complex ideas (e.g., describing, comparing, explaining cause/effect) while maintaining accuracy and clarity. Importantly, adjusting scaffolds for each learners needs becomes faster and easier through the use of programs like Micalo and Clicker. For example, during a task, some students may trace words; others highlight while reading; others may generate sentences with symbol-supported word banks.
4) Making assessment language accessible
Say we are assessing science knowledge, but the item is a dense paragraph with multiple embedded clauses and abstract or complex cognitive verbs, you’re often testing language skills more than content. Here, it is important to ask, ‘what am I measuring?’
Adjustments can include:
- simplified layout and reduced visual clutter on task sheet
- icons next to instructions or verbs
- short item stems with consistent structure
- visual supports for key vocabulary
- alternate ways to demonstrate knowledge or skill (oral, selection, supported writing)
5) Supporting relationships and sense of belonging
One of the most striking points from conversations with teachers was that:
Visualised prompts can reduce the emotional impact and response that sometimes comes with repeated correction or lack of access.
When a consistent prompt (visual or auditory) delivers accessible directions (rather than repeated teacher reminders), some students experience it as less confrontational and more predictable, supporting regulation and participation.
Visuals can also support identity and belonging. For example, by providing students with accessible, visual anchors of their own names, roles, class routines, “where I sit,” “what I need”, we are embedding this sense of belonging in everyday classroom practice. This can be particularly impactful for students who struggle with social communication and classroom navigation.
Start Monday
If you want this to be universal (and sustainable), focus on systems, not one-off resources.
- Choose 5 high-frequency classroom instructions and visualise or picturise them (sit spots/table time/pack up/listen/line up).
- Create one visual routine template for daily agendas and transitions and adopt the visual schedule principles.
- Adopt one consistent visual format for vocabulary (icon + word + student-friendly definition + example).
- Build one reusable scaffold for written responses (sentence frames + optional word bank).
- Audit one worksheet or assessment: remove clutter, reduce language complexity, add visual instruction cues.
Programs such as Micalo and Clicker can make this work faster by supporting symbol integration, predictable formatting, and efficient resource creation. But the core message is bigger than any platform:
Visuals are not a “support for some.” They are a universal access feature.
When visuals are embedded into everyday classroom practice, we stop asking students to “overcome” language barriers and start designing environments where language differences don’t become curriculum barriers in the first place.
This is inclusive practice you can feel in the room. Clearer learning, calmer transitions, stronger participation and more students showing you what they know.
