Designing for participation, wellness and compliance: why schools need sports field engineering from day one

Written by Jarrod Hill, CEO, SPORTENG

Schools, colleges and universities across Australia have long known the value of high-quality sports facilities and fields of play. They create key environments that influence student wellbeing, participation and overall positive school experiences.  For many schools and unis, quality sports facilities are more than a “nice to have”, they are an essential part of curriculum and the way students interact with each other.

But despite the importance of suitable sport and play spaces, many educational outdoor sports projects are still approached like standard construction jobs, rather than what they truly are: highly specialised Fields of Play.

At SPORTENG, we work alongside schools to bring clarity to decisions and make sure each Field of Play is designed to perform as intended.

A sports field is not just a surface

From the outside, a sports field looks simple: grass, line markings, maybe a set of goal posts.

But what sits underneath is what really matters. The underlying profile, and associated infrastructure, determines how the field performs, how safe it is, how long it lasts, and how much it is going to cost to maintain over time.

For education institutions, that has direct implications. When fields are not properly designed, they can become inconsistent, unsafe or unusable (particularly after a rain event). Maintenance becomes reactive and ongoing. In some cases, the space ends up limiting the range of activities it was meant to support and requiring to be closed to allow time for recovery.

When done right, the opposite happens. The field becomes a reliable, high performing asset that supports everything from day-to-day activity through to higher level sport.

Designed for how schools actually use them

Education institutions, particularly primary and high school environments place a lot of demand on their facilities. Fields and courts are used throughout the day across multiple sports, year levels and ability groups. They need to accommodate structured sport, informal use, training and matches. Additionally, these facilities are now being utilised by the community outside of school hours to assist with the demand on their networks.

This requires a considered approach. Our role at SPORTENG is to design Fields of Play that respond to these realities. That includes accounting for high usage, local climate conditions such as rainfall and heat, and site-specific constraints like space, levels and soil conditions.

It also means understanding what each school is trying to achieve and ensuring the facility can support that mix of activities. In many cases, that leads to smarter, multi-use solutions that allow schools to do more with the space they already have.

Supporting student wellbeing

Ultimately, this comes back to students.

Access to quality sports facilities has a direct impact on wellbeing. When fields are safe, reliable and available year-round, students use them more. Participation becomes part of everyday school life, rather than something limited by weather or safety concerns.

That consistency builds confidence and keeps students active. For some, it is about staying engaged and enjoying sport. For others, it becomes the foundation to push further and perform at a higher level.

This is how schools help support the champions of tomorrow, by providing environments that allow students to show up, improve and keep progressing.

When facilities do not perform, the impact is immediate. Fields close more often, surfaces become unreliable and usage drops. Opportunities are reduced, along with the consistency that underpins both wellbeing and development.

Let’s talk

Our team will be at the upcoming National Education Summit in Melbourne, where we will be speaking more about how early sports engineering input leads to better outcomes for education projects.

If you are planning a new facility or upgrading an existing one, come and see us! Ask questions, share what you are working through, and let’s have a conversation.

Because the best sports fields do not happen by chance. They are the result of good planning and the right input from the start.
