Teaching takes an incredible amount of energy. Between guiding students, meeting curriculum goals, and keeping the classroom positive, educators already have their hands full.
Recent research from Monash University on Invisible Labour confirms what we already know: principals and teachers are carrying a massive administrative load. So, when new tech like Virtual Reality (VR) or AI arrives at school, it often feels like one more chore on the to-do list rather than a helpful tool.
If we want to prepare students for the future, we have to start by protecting the time and energy of the teachers who guide them.
The Reality of the “VR Graveyard”
Walk into many schools today, and you might find a “VR Graveyard”—expensive equipment sitting in a cupboard gathering dust.
It’s almost never the technology’s fault. Immersive tech is incredible for student engagement. The real issue is the unseen work it takes to make it run. Imagine a standard 60-minute lesson. If a teacher has to spend 15 minutes charging headsets, connecting to Wi-Fi, and resetting passwords, a third of the learning time is already gone.
When a teacher is given a suitcase of hardware but no time to learn how to use it, the result is frustration. Bringing innovation into the classroom shouldn’t mean forcing our educators to act as IT managers or vice versa.

The 2030 workforce will demand a specific set of human-centric skills. Jobs and Skills Australia identifies these as the “Four Cs”: Care, Computing, Cognitive thinking, and Communication.
